Water-repellent or waterproof—are they the same thing or not?
Water-repellents and waterproofing products are often confused because THEY ARE SIMILAR BUT NOT IDENTICAL. Both products prevent water from entering a surface, but they do not work in the same way. Let’s look at the differences.
Why are they used?
- To prevent problems caused by water.
- Reduce/inhibit the appearance of efflorescence.
- Reduce/inhibit the growth of microorganisms, such as algae, mold, lichen, etc.
- Inhibit corrosion of metal structures.
- Inhibit the appearance of cracks.
- Save energy.
How do we apply these concepts to the Construction and Rehabilitation sector? When do we use one or the other?
WATERPROOFING is applied to:
- Floors, roofs and horizontal surfaces in general with little slope or where water may accumulate.
WATER-REPELLENT treatment is applied to:
- Walls and vertical surfaces in general, or horizontal surfaces with slope where water cannot accumulate.
