To do this, <strong>detergents<\/strong> are used which can be applied neat or dissolved in water depending on the nature of the detergent, the dirt to be cleaned, and the surface.<\/p>\n<h2>So what are detergents?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Detergents<\/strong> are a mixture of several types of substances. The most important substances that make up a detergent are surfactants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>In the diagram we can see the structure of a surfactant:<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1288 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/esquineo.web46.com.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/TENSOACTIVO-LIMPIEZA-.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esquineo.web46.com.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/TENSOACTIVO-LIMPIEZA-.png 480w, https:\/\/esquineo.web46.com.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/TENSOACTIVO-LIMPIEZA--300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The surfactant is divided into:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A polar hydrophilic zone with electrical charge that is soluble in water and causes dispersion or solubilization.<\/li>\n<li>Another non-polar lipophilic zone without electrical charge that does not dissolve in water and bonds to fat particles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>In this way, fat is dissolved in water.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1289 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/esquineo.web46.com.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/tensoactivos-nq.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esquineo.web46.com.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/tensoactivos-nq.png 542w, https:\/\/esquineo.web46.com.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/tensoactivos-nq-300x89.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Depending on the electrical nature of the hydrophilic zone, surfactants are divided into:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anionic<\/strong>: they present negative charges in aqueous solution and are the most widely used at the domestic level.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cationic<\/strong>: in aqueous solutions they present positive charges. They have disinfectant properties (although they do not clean as effectively as anionic surfactants).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-ionic<\/strong>: in aqueous solution they have no charge. They are used for dishwashers and do not produce much foam.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amphoteric<\/strong>: depending on the pH of the solution, they can act as anionic or cationic. They are used in the formulation of shampoos and products for use on the skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>PROPERTIES OF SURFACTANTS<\/h2>\n<p>The main property of surfactants is their ability to reduce surface tension.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Surface tension<\/strong>: The concept of <strong>surface tension<\/strong> refers to the <strong>amount of energy<\/strong> required to increase the <strong>surface<\/strong> of a <strong>liquid<\/strong> per unit area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Surface tension is related to the ability of a liquid to wet a surface. The higher the surface tension of a liquid, the smaller the area it covers and therefore its &#8220;ability to wet the surface&#8221; is lower. Surfactants reduce the surface tension of liquids, so the ability to &#8220;wet surfaces&#8221; will be greater and the cleaning effectiveness will be superior.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1287 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/esquineo.web46.com.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tension-superficial.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esquineo.web46.com.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tension-superficial.jpg 400w, https:\/\/esquineo.web46.com.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/tension-superficial-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Taking into account the ability to modify surface tension, surfactants have different applications:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wetting surfactants<\/strong>: The reduction of tension at the solid-liquid interface causes the liquid to spread across the surface of the solid and wet it. That is, it penetrates into the interior of the solid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dispersing and emulsifying surfactants<\/strong>: the property of dispersants is the ability to stabilize small solid particles within a liquid. Emulsifying products are capable of stabilizing dispersions between two immiscible liquids.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Foaming surfactants:<\/strong> those that generate foam. Foam is generated when air enters into the interior of the liquid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Detergent surfactants:<\/strong> detergency is the ability of a substance to remove dirt, such as grease, removing it from the surface to which it is adhered, and emulsifying it in water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is possible thanks to the chemical composition of the hydrophobic chain of the surfactant, which has characteristics similar to the composition of the grease to be removed. By mechanical means (agitation, rubbing, vibration, etc.), we break down the layer of grease, so it becomes microscopic droplets that are stabilized within the surfactant molecules.<\/p>\n<h3>Other components that detergents may contain:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sequestrants:<\/strong> characterized by the property that various chemical compounds have to associate with heavy metal ions present in water (calcium and magnesium), preventing their precipitation.
